Are routines healthy for cats?
We know sticking to routine helps us, but is it natural for cats and is it ideal?
My 2 year old cat princess leia never really had a routine to begin with.
As a kitten she was always eating at odd times and would sleep different times on different days. But as she has grown older she tends to follow this general routine:
sleep through morning
wake up early afternoon
go out
eat
sleep afternoon/evening
go out evening/night
hunt/play most of the night
sleep
If her routine is disturbed Leia can become upset. She needs stability and needs to feel safe. If strangers are in the house or if she has been locked in a room by accident/had a treatment or any other stressful situation this disrupts her routine and she will hide/lay low for a while. She is less approachable and less loving once her routine is disturbed.
Cats should have routines and should be allowed to stick to them, to promote health and well being and to make life simple and stable.
