Training fussy cat to wear collars

18 Nov

Here is Princess Leia, two yr old mog, wearing her new super soft orange velvet collar (with matching buckle and slider). She wasn’t always this relaxed about collars.

Since Leia was a kitten, she has hated collars. She would always find a way to get them off, would bite and chew at them, and would crouch low, go into hiding and be absolutley beside herself with worry over them.

But there was hope. Training a cat to wear a collar takes time and patience. And this is just what she needed.

Placing a thin, small and soft collar onto your cat and fitting it correctly is the main thing. Avoid hefty, bulky or harsh collars , and always ensure there is a breakaway safety buckle fitted.

Do this every day, starting from ten minutes, upto a good few hours wearing the collar, for the next few weeks or so. Do not let the cat out the first few days of wearing, in case the collar gets lost.

By the end, your cat will have forgotten it’s even there. But remember, consistency is the key. We know collars aren’t always going to be a cat’s first choice, but sometimes, especially if they are personalised, they are important.
